The roar of the dragon grew louder in the distance. Inside the castle's keep, all the servants trembled in their corners, not budging even when Lord Tromey bellowed, "More wine,'" as he waved his empty stein in the air, clutched in one beefy fist. In their barracks, the soldiers grew white, as they heard the sound of the creature that had killed so many of their brethren. Many of them made the sign to avert the evil eye. The wiser ones did not: they knew it would make no difference. They would be sent out on the morrow to slay the beast, as their comrades had gone before them. In the highest tower of the castle's keep, Lady Tromey heard the roar and smiled faintly. Her comb moved smoothly through her hair as she watched her reflection in the mirror.

Finished Length: Short story.
Notes: There's another female relative in here somewhere.... Why is the Lady smiling?
