Wholesome as Apple Pie: Fantasy
Dec. 6th, 2005 02:24 pmApple- and cinnamon-scented steam plumed up from the golden crust when the knife broke its surface. Sean sighed with longing, watching the pie with big round eyes that his mama used to call his best tool for getting along in the world. The cook was made of sterner stuff, though. She just shook her head. "We gets ours after they gets theirs, Sean-boy," she told him. "You know that. Now," she narrowed her eyes and her mouth firmed into that hard line that he knew meant she would not back down, "if you so much as take a pinch of crust until I say you can, I'll wallop you so hard that you won't be able to sit for a fortnight? Do you understand me?" "Yes'm," Sean said. He tried a sadly obedient smile on her, but she wasn't having any of it. If he couldn't have any of the pie, at least he could sit here and smell it. So he sat and smelled, drawing the fragrance into his lungs a bit at a time--
Inspiration: A cinnamon-scented candle
Story Potential: Medium-high. Possibly even high, simply because there's more story unscrolling in my mind, even if it isn't terribly fascinating story.
Notes: The pie is poisoned--magically, perhaps--and kills everybody else. Sean's in danger of some sort, whether as suspect or witness or both.... Sean is the only one who has resisted its lure, but the deep breaths he's been taking to smell it? Yeah. His sense of smell is dead, gone. Perhaps forever. Could give him a compensation of being a magic-sniffer, I suppose. His voice is also damaged. I'm pretty sure that this is a YA novel, too.
