Lorgnette's View: Fantasy

She had in time become resigned to the impossibility of ever truly being alone in her own house, but they could not follow her as closely when she ventured out into polite society. Unfortunately, the price of that small freedom was having to put up with high society. Usually. There were a very few exceptions, places where she could be mostly alone but they could not follow. The opera was one of them. She had been closing her mind and ignoring the antics of the baritone on stage, enjoying the feeling of freedom from crawling eyes, when she had heard a rustle beside the chair. It was the work of a moment to pluck up the letter opened that sat across her lap, to twist and begin to stab the intruder. Though she was old, her eyesight was not--
