The slither outside her doorway made her look up from cooking the stew with a grin, ready to greet her daughter. When a narrow garter snake eased under the door instead, she frowned. "Where's Nashua?" she demanded. The garter snake twined its sinuous body in a shrug. "Don't you give me that!" she snapped. "You've been following her around as if she was about to lay eggs since she was six years old--I don't believe that you can't keep track of her when you're actually supposed to be with her." the garter snake started to inch its way back under the door, contracting itself in upon itself in an effort to appear smaller.

Story Potential: Low.
Notes: I went to subvert the "the sound of a snake is scary" and it became this.
