The fixer came along right about noon, just as we'd hoped. He was a hard, mean man--the tears of children wouldn't soften him. But he did like his food, and a fine dinner had been known to make him go a little bit easier on the people providing it. It seemed wrong, somehow, that we should be able to squeeze out of our jam by using the skills that had gotten us into it in the first place, but we were sure as heck going to try. Mary Margaret had gone all out, opening cans and jars of exotic fruits that she'd been hoarding "just in case"-- in case the prime minister or some such stopped by, I expect.
