The scent of oranges and spice surrounded her in a cloud, a vivid treasury of scents that spoke of the riches she knew. No ordinary woman could have afforded to daub herself with the essences so costly and difficult to import, so rare and fine. No poor woman could have afforded it. No true lady would have flaunted her wealth so. This was how one found the measure of her, he thought, enjoying the fragrance. He’d realized those things within only a few minutes of meeting her, but it had taken him months of her acquaintanceship to realize that she knew what could be deduced and was deliberate in her choice of signals. That was a mystery that he was still attempting to unravel. A most pleasant mystery--for both--

Story Potential: Low.
Notes: Interesting little character sketch, though. Set in some medieval-ish time, obviously.
