The survival cocktail wasn't half bad, she thought, leaning back against the bar and sipping the drink. It tasted salty-sweet and a little overpoweringly of artificial flavoring, but under the circumstances, she was glad to be sipping anything at all. She looked around the room that surrounded her and stared at the other survivors. There was a man missing an arm, the stump bandaged off in a way that hopefully would allow enough oxygen to reach the wound to let it heal properly. There was a little girl rocking back and forth in the corner, staring off into space. She was a very pretty little thing, with wide blue eyes and dark red hair; she'd probably get adopted soon enough by a survivor family. Survivors were taken--

Inspiration: "survival cocktail" mentioned in a SciAm article about "implant[ing] human embryonic stem cells into rats that suffered heart attacks"
Story Potential: Medium.
Notes: Sadly, the whole "Darwinian trials become standard practice" gimmick *is* a bit overplayed.
