"But what was her motive?" he insisted, staring at the woman he loved with all his heart, and had loved for nigh fifteen years. "Why on earth would she ever try to kill me? She loves me, I know that for certain." He stared at her. She stared back, and in her eyes he *still* saw nothing but love, but she would not say a word, not to him and not to the investigators after he stepped outside. He asked, to be sure. They prosecuted her and put her in jail quite speedily; after all, there had been over a hundred witnesses to her murder attempt, and there was no way that it could have been anybody else.
