Anyone else but you, he thought, as he lurked in the darkness outside his target. Let the messenger be anyone else but you. He knew what he had to do, and he knew what the results would be, but he could not bear the thought that she would be the one to see what was to come. He wanted it to be a stranger, somebody who might judge him, but whose judging would mean nothing to him. If she came, and looked, it would matter. Would matter whether she approved or not, and he feared that she wouldn't. The messenger came, and it was not her. He felt a huge swelling of relief, and that made him pause. If it mattered so much what she would think, and he was certain that she would disapprove, why was he doing this? True, he believed that it was necessary, but he knew that she would--
