Invasive Species: SF
Feb. 6th, 2012 09:21 amAfter she left the commercial district, Zanna popped into one of the commuter check-stalls and stripped down. It was a pain in the neck (literally--the stall didn't have adequate mirrors and so she was craning her neck around to see every inch), but she used to live in Farmer's Fall, and so she would never skip the check. The fluffzards had been cute, and some little girl had taken a pair home with her from the commercial district, and her ignorant parents hadn't turned them in. It was a breeding pair. Within a year, there was an infestation, and the city council realized how bad it was and hired in an exterminator. He hadn't succeeded. Within five years, the state had dug a moat around Farmer's Fall and declared it uninhabitable--to anything but fluffzards, that is.
Inspiration: zebra mussels
Story Potential: High
Notes: Not super-high potential, but could be interesting. And yes, aliens might bring invasive species with them, even if they're not attempting to terraform earth a la Day for Damnation. This may not be the story idea/theme, but it's a good bit of background to keep in mind for the next time I write a story with aliens.
