They flashed the questions at him on the screen, broadcast it over the loudspeaker at random intervals throughout the day and night, and casually asked him in the line for the cafeteria or as the guard was leading him to the rec room. Once when the cafeteria lady held out a ladle of mac 'n cheese and casually asked, "Did you do drugs?" in the same tone of voice as "would you like some mac 'n cheese?" they almost caught him. Almost. Not caught in the sense that he was guilty, just caught in the sense that getting him to admit it would mean he could never leave. He conditioned himself almost as much as they did, to the extent that any surprise question got an automatic "no" answer. His girlfriend tried that about their future, and he ended up broken up with her just because she'd surprised him. A true answer would have been, "I haven't really thought about it, but certainly not until all this is cleared from my life."
