The scent of birthday cake wafted under the bedroom door and teased the nostrils of a little girl sitting in the bed. She looked up from the mag she was reading and sniffed the air. Yes, birthday cake. She closed her eyes and concentrated on the tantalizing odor. Not just any birthday cake, either: her favorite, white cake with cinnamon sprinkles all over it. She laid down the magazine on the bed and bounded to the door, happy as a lark. She should have known they wouldn't forget her birthday. They never would forget her birthday. They loved her. They were her family. And it was all perfect. She opened the door. "Mom?" she called out.

Inspiration: Wanted to do a scent-based beginning.
Story Potential: Medium potential.
Finished Length: Short story. Could be novel.
Notes: For the record, I would like to say that I tried really hard to keep this as a happy story, but it just didn't work out that way. Heck, it's probably a horror story. Suffice it to say, this is a dream. She wakes up in the alley near a garbage can. Don't forget to use scent transition.

This was written yesterday, but I'll backdate it in a bit.
