Humiliation Street was just down from the Bitter Almond Deli, so Lisa strolled through it on her way home. It was better than Rage Row or Humility Avenue. They didn't touch you so long as you stayed on the road; that was the rule. They just did their little enactments to the side, trying to persuade you that you belonged with them. She'd already lost two of her sisters and one brother to the streets. She wished that streets were the way that they had been when her grandma was young. Every night, her grandma told her the stories of how things had been then. It sounded wonderful. The ability to just step off a street and walk on the grass without having to check very carefully where you were, the ability to go to a friend's home after something called 'school'. After her grandmother had mentioned 'picnics', she and her second-youngest sister had pestered their mother until she gave in and--

Notes: Well, there's a long tradition of not letting yourself step off the paths. So this is kind of a future fantasy where it's all true. And the time is coming when Lisa (uck! change name!) will have to choose her path--and stuff about the world etc will be revealed. yadda yadda.
