Nov. 19th, 2005 02:35 pm"Teratogenesis," muttered the doctor, turning to strip the bloodstained gloves from his hands. His assistant turned and vomited in the sink. "They're birthing monsters. I don't--" he shook his head, "--I don't understand why. We've been so careful. They have only eaten station rations from the ship. They haven't drunk the water. They haven't been exposed to anything that we have, and still they're giving birth to monsters. I looked at the birth charts for this one myself. Perfectly normal up until the eighth month, and then--everything went to hell." He winced when an unearthly wail filled the room. The nurse heaved again, then straightened her back grimly, wiped her mouth, and picked up the needle to inject the newborn. The doctor looked away as she slid the killing drug between the broken, membrane-crusted wings of the baby--no, the monster, he had to keep thinking of them as monsters--
