The wobble sound from the air circulator fans on top of the building made his heart skip a beat. Maybe. He wasn't sure. All he could hear was the sound of the fans. He couldn't fear them creeping up the stairs after him, he couldn't hear them whispering behind his back, and he couldn't hear them cocking their guns to fire at him. All he could hear was the fans. So he lay down on his back beside the fans and had his first night of good, uninterrupted sleep in two years. When he woke up, a pigeon was staring at him. It opened its beak and he assumed that it made some sort of sound, but the fans drowned it out. He smiled in pleasure when he realized that he was seeing it just as a pigeon, not as a spy.

Story Potential: Medium. I'm sure it would be a good story. I'm just not sure that I'm the right one to write it.
Notes: Is he paranoid? Crazy? Are they really out to get him? Does it matter? Regardless, he stays on the roof and becomes some sort of crazy roof-dwelling pigeonkeeper, tolerated by the building owners because--. Then, one day, a) the fans stop, or b) "they" reveal themselves and somebody who knows how to deal with them is needed. Entire enclaves of roof-dwelling pigeon-keepers? Hmm. Probably too ridiculous.
