Broken Ritual: Fantasy

The ritual was nearly complete when the sun broke over the mountains. It would have been complete, in fact, had it not been for the huge bite that had been carved from the mountain the night before when a dragon attacked the town below. That one bite made the difference between life and death, for the maiden and for the dragon, and it changed the course of the entire kingdom, though for a long time nobody was really sure whether the change was permanent. It had never happened before, dig through the musty old books of the past though they did, and so they were entirely unsure as to whether it was good or bad or what would happen next.... Even the farmers went about their lives in great uncertainty, as if the failure of the ritual, by some bizarre chance, would render the crops dead in the fields, or would--
