Ideal Eyes: Fantasy

The eyes rolled in his hands like marbles as he dug his hands into the bucket and sifted through them. They had brought him all sorts of eyes: blue eyes, brown eyes, green eyes, hazel eyes, grey eyes, old eyes, young eyes, eyes with cataracts, eyes that had been Lasiked to perfection, eyes prone to eyestrain, eyes with strange spots in them, eyes that were the liquid color of purity, eyes from people born blind. All sorts of eyes had been brought before him in the three centuries that he’d been searching. One of the ideas that haunted him at night was that he’d missed this pass of the eyes, that they’d been in some unknown pauper born in an alley and buried in an unmarked grave, that he’d never find them. He himself had been born without eyes, as was proper for the one given the trust--

Notes: I dunno. Maybe they were his eyes once and he wasn't born without eyes? Maybe they are some significant carriers of power? Either way, the finder never sees the eyes until after their owners are dead (and not at his hand or that of his helpers)--except this time, he finds them while their possessor is still alive. Heh.
