Replacement: Fantasy
Apr. 2nd, 2007 10:56 pmHe'd been eager for his replacement for the first ten years, then resigned, and now--he found himself oddly hesitant to depart. It was time and more than time. He himself had replaced a man who'd only served seven years, but still he found himself hesitating it the bare stone room that had been hims chambers for so long. He'd taken down the woven tapestries, wrapped up the main crystal, replaced the bedding, swept the floor, and made sure there was a good stock of firewood and oil for the lamps, but still some essence of himself lingered. A shadow of years spent pacing the floor, then in contemplation, and finally in neutral acceptance of the time spent inside. He pulled that acceptance back to himself and--
Inspiration: Starting a new freewriting warm-up document. Thought that being reluctant to be replaced was too much done, tried a shifting phase, ended up with something that might be interesting.
Story Potential: High, actually, I think.
Notes: Some of the same syndromes as newly released prison convicts get, perhaps. Is this only a staging ground to get to the acceptance stage he's at, but he doesn't know this? Perhaps. Perhaps it truly is the end of his term as (something) really important. A fantasy setting.
