That little girl fluttered into the candy store in her checked gingham dress, demanding a horehound candy that she could suck on for a while. She didn't come with mama or papa in tow, but she produced a shined-up nickel, so I handed her her candy, expecting her to head on out to go after whatever neglectful parent had let her stray. She didn't. She plunked her bottom down on top of a sealed box of toffees, stuck the candy in her mouth, and proceeded to enjoy it with the most blissful expression I've seen on any face since the night my dear husband died in the arms of that little bitch from across the tracks. It wasn't a look that went right with a little girl's face--

Inspiration: The horehound in the cough drops I'm sucking on, and a NYT.com article about Long Time Leaving: Dispatches From Up South.
Story Potential: Medium.
Notes: I like this little scene, but it isn't really going anywhere in my imagination.
