Signing Away Sanity: Science Fiction
Apr. 12th, 2008 05:52 pmShe bid her sanity farewell as a job condition. It made her pause, seeing it spelled out right there in black and white, but she'd known that was the case when she started her job training. It wasn't new, it wasn't unexpected, and it was something she thought she'd accepted. After all, she'd just spent six years training for it. Still, it gave her pause. Even at the academy, the instructors had spoken around the subject. It wasn't that they were uncomfortable with it, or not too much--it was that they felt that they couldn't say much about it. It was different for everybody; some didn't even remember it afterward. They went in to work, signed the contract, were hooked up, and twenty years later they emerged, looking the same age but rich and with a comfortable lifestyle that ensured they'd never have to work again.
Inspiration: Feeling like I'm kissing my sanity farewell because of how much I'm working.
Story Potential: High? Could be fun to write.
Notes: She's not one of the lucky ones. If they are lucky.
