This vintage of apprentices seemed less promising, he thought, disgruntled. Less earth had they trod beneath their feet, fewer worlds seen with their eyes, fewer tastes explored with their tongue. Still, what he had was what he must work with. He grumbled and muttered complaints to the older journeyers, who thought (very quietly, in the utmost privacy of their minds) that he had sounded just as displeased when they had first come through, and by the end he was praising them to the stars. It was a disconcerting thought, that maybe it was the way he always was. It made them a little less sure of themselves. So the old man grumbled and poked and prodded and muttered about making the apprentices hang in the caves to get the proper aromas.

Inspiration: I'm eating cheese.
Potential: Medium.
Notes: There's something whimsical and pleasing yet slightly sinister about describing a set of apprentices in vaguely culinary terms.
