The crystals hung from the trees and chimed softly as the wind blew. Cherry blossoms drifted down among them, forming a fragrant carpet beneath her feet. The tea set sat upon a rock, awaiting her attentions to the proper ceremonies. The koi fish swam to and fro beneath the bridge as she crossed it. Her hair was shiny and held up in a beautiful arrangement. Her kimono was flawless. She shone as much as did the crystals and blossoms. The only thing marring her was the slight frown pinching her brows. Yes, it was all perfect, but still he had not allowed himself to be lured forth. All his files showed that this would be exactly the sort of setting that might bring the hermit from his cave to share tea with the beautiful girl who was coming to visit him, and yet, he remained locked away where she could not reach him.

Inspiration: Breeze outside.
Story Potential: Medium.
Notes: VR or somesuch. Science fictiony. Still not that good.
The letters were painted on smooth. Sun-tzu squinted through the magnifying glass that he held above the grain of rice, and after a long moment of study, he nodded his head in satisfaction. It was good. He had succeeded in painting every stroke perfectly, every character formed with intention and beauty. He set down the magnifying glass and looked up at his customer. "It is done," he said quietly. He knew that his life would end, now--it was that sort of client. He had prepared his son to follow in the trade, and he had warned him that one day, a client would come whose request would mean the end of his life. He hoped that he had trained his son to recognize that this was the way things were, not something to be grieved. Something to be hoped that it would be delayed, of course--

Inspiration: "Secret Message" by Rasputina--really inspired more by the little dialog she has before the live version.
Story Potential: High.
Notes: At first, I thought that he was painting a grain of rice that would be used as a component in some sort of magic, perhaps.... Perhaps. Perhaps something else. Either way, Oriental setting, magic, etc....I like.
The frog lazed on his lily pad. It was a pretty cushy life, all things considered. Flies were plentiful, he could watch carp swimming below his lily pad when he got bored, and he'd always loved basking in the sun. He was probably having the time of his indolent life, Li-Chang thought, as she watched the koi pond from her balcony. She, on the other hand, was not. A missing prince had complicated her life greatly. She knew he wasn't missing, but she could hardly tell his imperial majesty, her insufferable older brother, that the prince he'd imported to marry her was buys eating flies. And she knew he wouldn't believe her if she explained that it was because they had been cursed.

Inspiration: Frog-print address labels
Story Potential: medium
Finished Length: Short story.
Notes: Would need to do a fair amount of research to get the Asian fairytale tone right.
The shell cracked wide and from the yolk uncurled the chicken of space, who stretched his wings and uttered a proud crow that cracked apart the heavens. Li-Ling crouched and stared at this tiny fowl with a black-and-white galaxy in his eyes and the sheer color of the nebulae in his plumage. "What are you, little one?" she whispered. "Where did you come from?" She had saved the black stone-shaped egg when she found it buried in her rice patty, but only because she thought it looked interesting and might be part of an arrangement in her garden if she thought about it for a while. She had never expected such a creature to hatch from it.

Inspiration: NASA image: The Center of Centaurus A. It looked like an egg yolk to me.
Story Potential: Medium-high. I really like this bit, but I have no idea where it would go from here.
Finished Length: Short story.
Notes: I have no idea where this would go from here. Did I mention that? It would be written in the manner of a Chinese fairytale, though.
