In the countryside, most people know where to find the witch-queen of their district. She'll live in an isolated manor house, and she'll wear old-fashioned clothes, full-length dresses and cloaks, and she'll always be terribly gracious, but she keeps to herself. If you need to find her, you may have to pass through a maze or do favors for creatures in need of help who turn out to be critical to your success. In this city, you have to find your way through filthy sewers and abandoned factories, looking intently at every bag lady until you find the one who wears a crown. The bag ladies have figured this out, and some of them wear circlets just to mess with you, so you have to find the one who wears the *right* crown. Once you do, give her roses and a newspaper from tomorrow and she'll bless you--

Story Potential: High?
Notes: I'm not sure if the story itself would be that great, but I do love this opening.

the gate

Brand new suckers! the sign advertised. She paused, tilted her head, and considered the shop's window. A few pumpkin suckers winked at her, and candy cobwebs illuminated the edges of the window. A gingerbread witch dangled from the center. She made a moue at it; you could tell it was a witch because of the large wart portrayed on the nose. She touched her own delicate protuberance. She did not look at all like the stereotypical witch, which pleased her, particularly when those well-off clients came in to visit and found themselves highly surprised. It wasn't just vanity; her beauty was a useful tool. She contemplated snubbing the shop, but as it happened, she was extremely fond of pumpkin suckers.

Story Potential: Low.
Notes: Cute little vignette, but not a story idea.
The task list left for her on the fridge made her quail. Work had exhausted her, and she'd come home with the firm intention of nothing more demanding than a long soak in the tub and an early bedtime. Instead, she had gone to her apprenticeship, only to find a list of chores that would take her at least until midnight to complete. She scowled at the fridge. She wasn't even allowed to use animating magic that would make the feather duster and broom take care of a large chunk of work themselves. Disney cartoons aside, witches were entirely fond of that spell, and they rarely ended up with uncontrollable disasters caused by their commands. But now it was forbidden, or so the list--

Inspiration: My to-do list for tonight.
Story Potential: Medium-high
Notes: Huh. Could be cute. So she ends up having to take the clever approach--finding an person in need of a good object lesson and forcing them to clean for her?
The pentagram was easy to spot. They hadn't even tried to hide it this time. She'd spotted them shaved into cows, painted on the back of paintings, and worked into elaborate ironmongery. She hadn't seen many that were painted on barns plain as day. Maybe the wreath around it might have fooled some into thinking it was a hex sign, but she could see from the road that it had been carefully painted so that the wreath wouldn't form a complete circle, thus rendering the protection it could have offered to be null. She gritted her teeth. She got enough funny looks from folk who saw that she carried around so many protective hexes herself, how could they miss something that was so blatantly wrong?

Inspiration: Pentagram.
Story Potential: Medium potential.
Notes: I like the setting that this piece implies, though that sort of this is terribly overdone these days. Le sigh.
