The funky chicken flapped its wings. Mercy looked sideways at it. That was one dang funky chicken. Its wings weren't the right shape, and one of them was significantly longer than the other, but the little chicken seemed dang proud of it. "Come out and see this," she called to her husband. He sauntered out the front door, spat on the ground, and tilted his head to the side in consideration. "Did it look like that when it hatched?" he asked. She shook her head. These past years on a farm hadn't taught him too much, seemed like, though he was a good enough man once somebody pointed him in the right direction and told him what to do. She considered that to be one of the many reasons that God had put her on his green earth. "Can't tell what a chicken's going to look like when it hatches," she reminded him.

Inspiration: "Funky Chicken" - Rufus Thomas
Story Potential: Medium.
Finished Length: Short story.
Notes: No notes. A more rural setting, think farmland in Kansas.
