She bowed her head with contrition. She lowered her fingers into the water, braced herself for the pain, and said, "Forgive me, for I have failed. I allowed one to get away." Instead of the massive bloodletting that she expected, there was only a tiny nip on her fingers. Her eyes opened with surprise, and she stared into the waters. At first, she thought that she had been forgiven, that there had been some reason beyond her own incompetence that she had failed, that all was not lost. Then she saw the fish that had nibbled on her fingers, and her hope turned to horror. A silver-scaled fish stared up at her with wide, marble-blank eyes. The holy piscine of the temple had not come to her call.
